Laura's first book was published by Doubleday in 1976.  It contained 50 poems including "The Two Headed Calf".  ​The back jacket reads in part: 

 

Selected by William Stafford from among 1,600 submissions by unpublished poets, The Hocus Pocus Of The Universe is the winner of the Walt Whitman Award sponsored by the Academy of American Poets.  

Laura Gilpin was born In WI in 1950 and grew up in Indianapolis.  She has a B.A. degree from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A. degree from Columbia School of the Arts.  She lives in New York City where she works for the Teachers & Writers Collaborative and coordinates the poetry program at the Henry Street Settlement.
